It is an continuous example of multi-agency partnership working between New Cross Gate NDC, Lewisham PCT and Greenwich Community Food Initiative (GCFI) hosted by Greenwich Community Development Agency (GCDA).
The Food Coop was established as part of our drive to promote healthy eating across the area and increase the access to good quality fresh fruit and vegetables at affordable prices. The food co-op aims to provide good quality produce at reasonable prices in an area where it is otherwise unavailable. It is run by the community for the community.
Since its inception, we have developed, in partnership with the PCT, a Health Trainers programme whereby local residents are trained to signpost people to health services in the area and to help people look after their health. Part of their assignments will be to volunteer on the stall on a rota basis - so not only will local customers have access to affordable fresh fruit and vegetables but they will also have access to a health trainer at the same time. This is a new model of working that is being developed with the aim of highlighting local services and provision.
We have a small pool of volunteers from the local area, but would like to extend this as we feel there is scope to expand the stall. Volunteers would be given training and are given an allowance to get their own supply of fresh fruit and vegetables from the stall.
